12-CELL Ultra Capacity Battery Review

I have an HP Elitebook 8740w. I bought this battery to help me get through a 4 hour lecture while taking notes on powerpoints from my professor. I have to say that this battery has lasted quite a long time. I managed to watch a full DVD on it and still have juice left to surf the web and check email. However, it's about 3 years later and the laptop warns me from boot up that the battery has reduced capacity. It does give me about half an hour of time before it dies out and I'm left running on the original, regular capacity battery that came with the laptop. This being my first day of a new semester, I hoped that I could make it through a 4 hour lecture again. Last semester I had only 2 hour long lectures and had plenty of power when class ended. Today, I was worried that I wasn't going to make it through class. The 12 cell battery was dead within a half an hour, and the other battery carried me through to the very last minute of class. However, the low power warning came up and I thought it was going to shut off on me.
Funny thing about laptop batteries-they can hold a charge for a few years and then they're shot. It's almost a waste to buy something like this unless you're keeping the computer long term like I am. I figure this time around, I'm disconnecting the battery from the laptop when it's plugged in. I think that might have added to the shortened life of the original. I guess I'll have to keep you all posted.
PS-the battery that came with the laptop is still holding a charge well and lasted about 3 and a half hours while I added notes to my powerpoints as well as sat idle (screen illumination at the lowest setting, wi-fi off).
