Overall I'm satisfied with this battery although it has some issues that might be unacceptable to other buyers. One star off for problems related to the battery indicator/battery charger/battery interface. I love being able to work for long periods wherever I want. I haven't owned the battery long enough to speak to its durability but I would recommend it to a friend. My netbook is an Aspire AOD-250 1695, which is low-end. My OS is Win 7 SE. I most commonly use MS Office 2010 beta, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop Elements, itunes, and of course the usual browsers, security, etc. Sometimes I watch videos using the VLC player and an external DVD drive, but not often. I am obviously not a power user.
The break-in procedure per mfr instructions: The instructions state that at first the battery will charge for about fifteen minutes and then stop charging. You have to remove and replace it to get it to charge fully. You have to fully charge and discharge the battery a few times at first. Fair enough, as this is explained up front, although I've never heard of having to "break in" any kind of battery before even though I've worked with some odd ones in the course of my work. Has anyone else?
The free jump drive is a strange looking piece of garbage & I wouldn't risk inserting into my machine. I tossed it; low-memory jump drives cost about nothing these days so who cares?
Pro's:
1. Very long life, depending on what you're running & how much time the computer is asleep. I'm getting about 8-9 hrs of up time.
2. Cost - less than 1/5 of what I paid for my netbook. The brand-name 6-volt battery costs about 1/3 of what I paid for my netbook. As if.
3. Not having to fuss with the charger & cord when I'm in a hurry and don't have space for carrying extras.
4. No more outlet hunts.
5. Working on long flights with no worries.
6. The extra height in the back caused by the battery shape. It's high enough to keep the battery from sucking up excessive lint, dust, & filth, yet small enough that my netbook still fits in its small neoprene case. (I'm sensitive to this as I recently had to tear down my Dell laptop because the fan was full of crud.) I like the typing angle myself, though that's a rather personal thing.
7. Service from Brainy Deal. There were a few batteries advertised on Amazon for the AOD-250, but reviewers reported compatibility issues. I called Brainy Deal to make sure that I ordered the right model, and the friendly rep quickly confirmed. In addition, the battery only took three days to arrive.
Con's:
1. Weight. The battery doubles the weight of my netbook. However, the battery's weight is in the manufacturer's spec's and is mentioned in a number of reviews so I wouldn't drop my rating based on weight. For me, the trade-off of time vs weight is worth it, but it's something to consider.
2. The battery indicator doesn't consistently show the correct amount of charge, so it's better to ignore the indicator and be aware of how long you've been using the battery.
3. The indicator often shows the battery's charge at 0% and not charging even when the battery's partially or fully charged.
3. Three times now when the indicator has suddenly changed from showing a charge to showing no charge my netbook has completely shut down with no warning. I've used my netbook every day for the past two months so I don't know that this problem is solely related to the battery, but the shutdowns were definitely in conjunction with the battery indicator. Again, I wouldn't drop my rating due to this issue. Caveat emptor.
4. Frequently the battery will not charge if I'm using the netbook while the charger is plugged in. Usually, but not always, this can be remedied if I shut down my machine, remove & replace the battery, and then start up again.
5. Sometimes (not always) when the battery doesn't recognize the charger the battery will drain as though the charger's not plugged in. Another thing to keep an eye on.
I now usually charge when my netbook is off (at night) and use the battery alone when my netbook is on. This isn't terribly inconvenient for me because I get so much time out of each battery charge. But no leaving the netbook on 24/7.
HTH someone.
