Usage:I have had 4 (2 sets of 2) of these battery cases for about 2 years now (I use a large number of AA batteries in external strobe flashes for photgraphy, 4 per flash -- 8 to 14 AA batteries at a time depending upon the setup).
Review:
The cases have held up perfectly. I love them & would rate them a 5-star, but for one fatal flaw:
--Not 100% compatible with NiMH rechargeable batteries
NiMH batteries will ONLY fit in the cases positive-side up or the lid will not close. Alkalines fit in both directions just fine.
Explained:
Inside the case is a pair of ridges that run the length of the case at the bottom. I believe they are present to keep the batteries from moving vertically inside the case whenever the batteries are insert positive-side down. The ridges are designed so that the positive terminal of the battery (the tip that sticks up on the positive side of the battery) is supposed to slide right between the two ridges. However, the gap between the two ridges is only wide enough to accommodate non-rechargeable alkaline batteries. If you compare the size (diameter) of the positive tip of a NiMH rechargeable to that of a non-rechargeable alkaline, you will notice that the NiMH positive terminal is wider (larger diameter). As a result, when you insert the batteries positive-side down, the lid cannot close because the positive terminal ends up sitting on TOP of the two ridges rather than sliding in between the two ridges, making the batteries stick up a little higher -- just enough to keep the lid from being able to close.
Why does it matter?
When you have multiple sets of batteries -- enough to warrant multiple battery cases -- you need to be able to track which batteries have been used/discharged & which are "fresh". The simplest way to do this is to always insert charged batteries into the cases in the same direction (all positive side up, or all positive tips down). When your set of batteries are discharged, you swap them with a fresh set, and insert the discharged batteries in the opposite direction (e.g. positive side down). At a glance you know which batteries are good, and which are used up. This is infinitely easier than trying to remember, "ok, today, the green, red, and blue cases are all discharged, and the orange and clear cases are still fresh".
Other than that, the cases are great & are of high quality. A minor design flaw that majorly affects those of us with a lot of NiMH rechargeable batteries.
If you don't use NiMH batteries, or don't need to track which batteries are charged/discharged, I *highly* recommend these cases.
